According to researchers from the Harvard Medical School and the University of California, San Diego, happiness spreads through their social networks like an emotional contagion. The study shows that the chances of friends living within a mile of participants who were happy were 25% higher, and that the chances of their friends and even the friends of those friends also have an increase in their chances of happiness even if they did not know the participant at all. They found that sadness exhibit the same quality, but that it does not spread as efficiently as happiness. Apparently the famous saying that says: "Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone" is true! Communication

It is a condition of our human existance that we communicate, and considering how little we know about the way the rest of the planet communicate it is something that we are almost arrogant about.

As a human species we delight in being able to train lesser species about the way we communicate and ignore the wide range of seemingly incomprehensable sounds that those same species use when in their natural habitat. Two very well documented animals that have been the brunt of our own language are the chimpanzees and dolphins, and in both cases we have found that the communication between the animals themselves are far more capable and complex than we previously thought.

Many people do not realise how emotion changes our perception, and there are still people that believe they can present a logical argument when they are emotionally involved. Scientific discovery has confirmed something that centuries of heated argument has proved with experience, that logical ability and emotional involvement are mutually exclusive. The exact reason for this is not quite clear, but it probably has something to do with the way that emotions activate a wide range of brain areas that not only change our perception but also influence our rational ability.

If we take a close look at how we communicate between ourselves and even how we communicate with ourself we may be surprised at how ineffective this communication sometimes is. People are often aware that they did not hear everything in a conversation but they seldom question the fact, either out of fear or conviction.

If communication is then further distorted by the need to translate to another language the risk of being misunderstood become critical, even more so when such a translation needs to take place in the mind of both sender and reciever.

Add to this the fact that we loose our ability to think logically and therefore fail to communicate effectively when we become emotionally charged it could seem that our society is doomed to eternal confusion.

Review of “The Mexican”

I just watched Leroy die in The Mexican, a box office failure with Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt. One of those movies that never managed to break the bank at the ticket office, but a movie that is rich in character and wisdom. And full of little vignettes about what life is for any one of us.

Leroy you see, started it off by asking Julia a question about love. Up to that time in the movie she was convinced that she new exactly what she wanted. But when Leroy asked her about love, she could not find what she was looking for.

And thus we find the reason why Leroy is such an important character of this story. What Leroy so aptly open for discussion is when is enough, and he does so by asking her about love. Leroy is shot soon after he caught the frantic character, played by the inimitable Julia Roberts, speechless with his Catch 22 about love.

If you look at everything else in the movie you will see how each of the characters play out this eternal question in how they act on their fundamental belief about love. It also shows how we change our fundamental belief to the situation at hand.

In my own point of view I think the movie provides us with enough understanding to allow us to grow in our own perception of love, and although everyone dies in the end it is precisely that change in perception that makes it all right.

It’s definitely worth a watch, even if you’ve seen it before. If you consider the money that you’ll pay to buy the DVD, and you weigh it against the value you’d get in the lesson about love its a steal at the price. Order yours here.

It feels as if I spent the whole day on my knees. I guess some would say I’m blessed from spending such a day in reverence fore the throne, alas I have to say that I was painting floors. The toilet floor no less.

And while I’m painting black abyss it hooves me, neigh moves me thus. My thoughts in turmoil searching harmony and Zen in this, my barren floor of black.

Once a while I deem it worth my self-esteem to shout and interrupt myself to ask, who paints a toilet floor the color of the night?

But blinded by the genius of, hey that was myself, the cosmos open up. Here I magine twinkling stars while in the corner there you see a whirling galaxy and there, right between that constellation there, awash with blue and red, no wait a rainbow full of winking stars we see a nebula arise out from the cold dark floor.

I wonder, should I paint the door?

I recently met a far removed cousin for the first time in many years. In fact, the last time we had seen each other was when… I cant even remember. At the time I really, really liked the man, though I was still a child. We parted journey then, and since that time a lot has happened in his life and in mine.

Since then I’ve listened without much attention how he lived his life, never really finding a convincing character reference from anyone. And thus it was that when we met, I greeted him with open arms. As if the last time we had been parted from pleasant company through nothing else but other responsibilities was yesterday.

He told me of a man that builds musical instruments and needed parts. When he started to inquire about buying stock he immediately ran in to problems, becoming more and more frustrated with his dilemma he started playing with his Parker pen. And then he realized that the stock he needed was right there in his hands. After making a quick phone call to Parker they sent him two bags of exactly what he needed, free of charge.

I commented on the fact that it was a perfect illustration of how the universe provides to all our needs, how strange they may even be, if we only open our eyes and look. To which he immediately agreed, as if it was something he found often too. Something he found true.

My heart almost stopped a beat, and in that moment the years we were separated simply fell away. Without anything changing physically, and nothing being said I flashed a memory to the connection we had shared those many years ago, and found within it a lot of innocence and strength I’d since lost and then regained by growing wiser.

In the flash of recognition I found myself smiling at the meeting of a kindred soul as me. A soul that walked a road so different from my own that it could be as if we had never met. But yet we were standing here in a reality we both share. Share in views of worth and value, share in views of lessons learned. And though we may have journeyed miles apart our lives had given us the same.

Feeling blessed I smiled and tried to pass the lesson on to my dad who came with him on that day, and who was struggling to see his worth and the value of his life. Who failed to accept that he has lived a life as blessed as me, and even though I’ve tried to change his mind before, still insist holding on to values of a world gone by. In writing this I still feel blessed, and revel in our shared divinity. I thank the bliss I found that day, and days to come since then.

Glimpsing the divine…

I stand in awe and ‘mazement at the width and breath of wanderings through my mind over the last few years, but through it all one thing remains pretty constant. Somebody thought of it before me.

Take for instance my recent discovery of Arthur. When I first heard about his thinking I was all exited to find someone with similar flights-of-fantasy, but this joyous tiding soon changed to a feeling of disappointment, even envy that he published before me. Two hundred and fifty years before me!

He submitted his idea to the zeitgeist he denied, did I mention that he denied the zeitgeist, at the ripe old age of 25. Up to then I thought I was lucky, even blessed to find the peace and clarity of mind I have today at 46.

You win some, you lose some I guess, but I cannot deny a delightful slither of glee when I found that only 5 students enrolled in his pompous class, with some or ‘nother pompous class name. I quickly recognized forgiveness to say that this was probably one of the main reasons he got so famous, and lived such a glorious age to 72.

You see, Arthur Schopenhauer was a pompous sour puss, more pompous than he never was. A Scrooge McDuck with nothing less than misery to sell. I kid you not he carries the distinction of being called… ag what does it matter anyway. He’s famous.

So famous that he played a great role in the lives of guy’s like Wagner, and hence still hero of all time, Albert Einstein! Yiaaahh… He was a pessimist… No wait, he was THE biggest pessimist that ever left their mark on human thought, but at the same time he influenced composers like Wagner to change musical direction and write compositions like “Flight of the Valkyries”, using techniques that he developed.

At times like these I stand in awe and amazement at the wonder that is me. A wonder ‘that sets free my mind to the farthest reaches of space and time. At times like these I like to tip my hat to us and the bond we share in love, and smile at glimpsing the divine through time.

The Sudan, Congo, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe are all countries that belong to a very selected group, countries that abuse human rights. South Africa used to belong to the same group due to our previous international affairs, but apparently not?

According to Human Rights Watch an organization specializing in these matters we have recently changed our view on a number of key issues, including the Dalai Lama!

I do not always agree with everything that human rights activists say, but when I heard the news this morning I had tears of joy.

I just watched 30 Rock and as usual I found it both enjoyable and thought provoking. Like the whole idea of seeing the world through someone elses eyes.

Walking a mile in someone elses shoes may lead to better understanding, but spending a day looking through someone's eyes could very well leave you mad.

The whole issue of handedness has always interested me, perhaps because I am lefthanded. The findings of a recent article combine a large number of studies and propose that handedness is a common occurance in various species.

Seems like right handedness provide animals the ability to multitask specific feeding activities with predator monitoring. Chicks who have developed in the dark lose this brain lateralising behaviour and are quite good at picking seeds from pebbles until they have to monitor for predators. Then they do a poor job of both.

Intuitive knowledge

We have the ability to intuit much of our own knowledge by observing the emotional reaction of other people when they encounter something that we havent experienced before. The ability to infer meaning by observing the emotional reaction of others is one of the first abilities that we develop in an effort to understand our world. It is based on one of the earliest known sensory skills that we aquire, that of reading the emotional content in faces.

From this emotional content we intuitively perform the actions that we observed leading to pleasure, and we sub-consciously select probable outcomes that may replicate the conditions where we observed a positive emotional reaction.

In an environment where emotions are honestly expressed this system of learning provides the perfect way to give infants the abillity to survive and prosper, without the need to rely on less efficient means of communication such as language. We all know that such honest environments are difficult to find, and it is therefore understandable that many infants grow up with false inherited experiences.

This early growth method can also be negatively influenced by environmental conditions that do not allow the infant to establish reference values for the different emotions during the time that they have the ability to percieve emotion.

Incorrect or absent reference values at this stage of a childs development can cause severe adjustment problems in the broader society. It can also explain many of the different learning and behavioural problems that children are diagnosed with in our society. If we are exposed to honest expression during the time of our life that we are experts at sensing feelings and emotions we have a far greater change of being happy in our lives.

Honest expression later in life also provide us the opportunity to correct any of the false emotional reference values, but this time we have to use language to express our opinion. This in turn can be referenced with our own memories to allow us the opportunity to adjust the emotional content of our previous observation, thereby adjusting our own value system to a universal understanding of emotion and feeling.

In much the same way our society has created a multitude of reasons not to express ourself honestly, with the result that children often find it difficult to correct false emotional values. By honestly communicating our opinion of our own reality we can establish a common reality that reflect us as an individual. Through communicating we can discover who we are.

Strange how you can see right to the bottom of the pond if the water is clear and there is no reflection..

I once said that the eyes are the mirror to the soul, it is in the eyes of another that we see ourselves reflected with understanding. But if that understanding is clouded by opinion that is not their own, how can we ever expect to see our own soul. Perhaps I should add love in front of the eyes?

Like the wind removes the mirror of a pond, so love removes the clouds of opinion.

instead we make up some rules and attempt to understand, until we realise we have to remember the rules of communication. And rules are there plenty!

in the military, officers are expected to greet the ranking officer before joining a party. Without doing that you can expect things to happen, like the barman totally ignoring you. Embarrasing things!

in civilian life it is crude to ask a girl if she is pregnant if she picked up weight, especially if she is single? Not even when she glows from being with child!

The whole concept of binaural sounds still get me. So correct me if I'm wrong:

Just like every organ or system in the body tune to a frequency, so does the brain.
The frequency of each organ or system is called the dominant frequency.
Once an organ is tuned to a dominant frequency it will follow a frequency shift.
Thanks to the EEG we know that the brains' frequencies change at different levels of performance.
Binaural beats are dominant frequencies of the brain, like the purr of a cat is the dominant frequency of bone.

How strange that love and misery are similar in a sense?

Both are given unconditionally at their best. And in both cases the more active energy we put in them the more they are successful.

Both are a reason only unto themself, but only love brings lasting change. And that is why they are on different sides of the same coin.

Funny enough, the same is true for many things once we embrace love. They appear to be on the other side of the coin.

Accidental Dad

There is something interesting with somebody who relates a verbal conversation by others, including what he said... and then he says: 'There was a pause. I think.'

Dr Phil ran a story about a guy whose parents concieved through sperm donation, and later in life he found his biological dad. He made an interesting comment that he and his biological dad have much more in common with each other than his new found dad has with his own children. Why?

This guy also crossed paths with his dad several times before they discovered their common bond.

According to the new dad, the pause happened just after his younger son blurted the fact of their 'relationship' to his wife.

It was all rather bizarre as his wife still commented that Dr Phil strongly advised agressive therapy in such cases of accidental parent 'discovery', but the two were just having such a great time!
